Chapter Eleven
Darius
“Can you guys handle guns?” Harlan asked.
“You’d better believe it,” I said.
“Good.” He shoved a rifle into my hands.
“Got enough for the whole class?” Levi asked.
“Absolutely.” Julie handed Ian a weapon and then looked at Levi as she held up a shotgun. “Can you handle a twelve-gauge?”
Levi rolled his eyes. “Can I handle a twelve-gauge? Pfft. Give me that.” He snatched the gun from her.
She laughed dryly and shouldered another gun. Armed and bracing as best we could on the deck as the boat bounced over rough waters, we readied our guns. The wind whipped at my face, and I squinted to keep my vision from blurring as I lined up the iron sights with the boats speeding after us.
Before any of us had squeezed off a single shot, a dozen or more muzzles flashed, and a hail of bullets narrowly missed us.
“Motherfucking wolves,” I muttered.
Julie and Levi glared at me but didn’t say anything.
I braced against the railing and fired back. One of the wolves dropped.
“Nice shot,” Julie said.
“Thanks.”
Movement from the corner of my eye turned my head. A man with a rifle. I had just enough time to shove Julie out of the way before the muzzle flashed. The bullet ricocheted off something, and one of the wolves behind me swore, but it sounded like surprise, not pain.
“Jesus,” Julie breathed. “Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it.”
We leveled our weapons again.
More bullets flew at us. They missed Julie. They missed me.
A grunt beside me turned my blood colder than the water under the boat. As I turned, Levi’s hand went to his side. He dropped to his knee, and then crumpled to the deck. The white fiberglass beside him darkened in a rapidly expanding pool of red.
“Oh God.” I handed my gun off to Ian. “Keep firing.”
He glanced at Levi but did as I said, returning fire as the other boats closed in on us.
I dropped to my knees beside Levi and rolled him onto his back. His heart was still beating. Weakly, softly, but still beating.
“Levi,” I said, almost choking on his name. “Levi, talk to me. Please.”
His face was ghostly white, but as he swept his tongue across his pale lips, I couldn’t help smiling.
“Hey,” I said. “How do you feel?”
“Like ass.”
“Good.” I pressed my hand hard against his wound as I searched for something else to soak up the blood. “Means you’re still alive.”
“Fucking yay,” he muttered. His pulse suddenly spiked, and he tried to get up, but I pushed him back down.
“Where’s Ian?” he asked.
“I’m right here.” Ian knelt beside him. “How bad is it?”
“Didn’t pierce his heart,” I said through chattering teeth. “He’ll live.”
Levi groaned.
To Ian, I said, “Stay up there.” I nodded toward where the other wolves fired back at the boats. “I’ll do what I can here.”
He nodded and returned to his place beside Julie. His heart was going crazy, but he kept the gun up and steady.
Levi’s eyes fluttered open. “We’re going to get them all killed. Julie and Harlan. Fuck, we’re going to get everyone killed.
